Chennai: A desperate Congress high command on Thursday dispatched one of its senior leaders to meet DMK president M. Karunanidhi. Azad along with former state Congress chief K. V. Thangkabalu called on Karunanidhi at his CIT colony residence.

Even optimistic Congressmen here refuse to buy Azad’s theory that it was “usual courtesy call”, which, he stated while emerging out of the meeting.

“Kalaignar and Stalin have categorically ruled out alliance with Congress time and again in the recent days. There was no need to call on Kalaignar at Chennai en route Vellore where he attends a private function tomorrow.

The meeting was arranged with AICC’s consent. It is obvious that Kalaignar has been informed beforehand about Azad’s visit to his home,” a senior Congress leader revealed.

‘10 janpath’ is still harping on a grand alliance with both DMK and DMDK in its team. Sonia’s political advisor Ahmed Patel has already opened channels with influential Vijayakanth’s brother-in-law L.K. Sudish,” an AICC member confided adding that AICC is making last ditch effort to win back DMK’s confidence.
