Ashwini Nachappa’s debit card thief caught in Mysore

BangaloreLess than a week after a thief robbed former Olympian and ace sprinter Ashwini Nachappa’s debit cards from her bag and withdrew Rs 2.4 lakh from nearby ATMs in Jayanagar, the police arrested the thief from his hideout in Mysore and recovered Rs 1.97 lakh from him.

The suspect, Ravi Setty (44) from T. Narsipur in Mysore district, came to Bangalore frequently.

He was reportedly employed as a bus agent nearly five years ago, but his addiction to horse-racing, single-digit lottery and gambling in general made him incur significant losses.

Stacking up loan after loans to satisfy his addiction made him lose his job, the police said.

In 2008, he hatched a plan to get rich easy. Every morning, he reportedly went through the events section of newspapers and make notes on important functions or events that would be attended by the rich people.

He would also attend grand weddings and other functions in either Mysore or Bangalore.

Ravi had reportedly stolen from people attending functions in Town Hall, Ravindra Kalakshetra, Chitrakala Parishath and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan over the last few years.

Ravi dressed himself well and attended functions as an invitee. He targeted unattended handbags or unassuming women.

He reportedly stole money, gold ornaments, wallets, debit/credit cards, watches and gifts at these events, and then make good his escape.

But his luck ran out when the Jayanagar police took the theft of Rs 2.4 lakh seriously and tracked him down.

Around 12 noon on December 3, Ashwini Nachappa was attending a function at Kithoor Rani Chenamma Grounds in Jayanagar second block. As she left her handbag on her chair and walked towards the flag post, Ravi, who was standing behind Nachappa, allegedly stole her wallet containing her debit cards from inside the bag.

Finding a slip of paper in the wallet on which Nachappa had written down the PIN numbers of her cards; Ravi allegedly withdrew Rs 2.4 lakh from four different ATMs in Jayanagar III and IV blocks and fled to Mysore.

Sub-inspector Eshwari P.N. attached to the Jayanagar police station tracked the suspect down after going through photographs of the event and noticing the thief in close proximity to Nachappa. Based on a tip-off received from an informant, Ravi was nabbed from a rented house on Dr Rajkumar Road, Bannur, in Yeraganahalli, Mysore on Sunday.

The suspect had by then gambled away Rs 35,000 of his loot. The police said Ravi was a habitual offender wanted for many cases in police stations across Bangalore, like Girinagar, High Grounds, SJ Park, Malleswaram, Cubbon Park, and Jayanagar; as well as at Nazarbad in Mysore and Nanjangud.

Chennai: An 18-year student of a private engineering college who immolated self after a fight with his mother sustained 25 per cent burns near Poonamalee on monday.

The boy had taken this step after a fight with his mother allegedly over a loan that she took from members of Puratchi Bharatham for usury, sources said.

Andrews, 18, son of Merlin, resident of Melma Nagar in Poonamallee, doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire after a heated argument with his mother, around 9.30 am on Monday.

He was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical college hospital.

Speaking to DC, Merlin, the boy’s mother said that she had taken a loan of Rs 2.25 lakh from two persons, Ashok Kumar and Gopu, functionaries of Puratchi Bharatham, a political outfit and had been paying interest at the rate of 10 paise per rupee.

Man gets life term for burning alive wife

New Delhi: A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life by a Delhi court for burning alive his wife as he suspected her of having an extra-marital affair.

The court took a lenient view towards convict Maya Deen since he has four children, maintaining that great injustice will be done to them if a harsh view is taken towards him as the kids will be left alone in the absence of their parents.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau also relied on the dying declaration of 40-year-old victim Manju which corroborated with the police version. In her dying declaration to a magistrate, she had also said that her husband had set her on fire, the court said.

When she was shifted to the hospital, she had informed the police officials and doctors that her husband had poured kerosene oil upon her and burnt her.

"Though what Maya Deen has done does not entitle him to any leniency and severest punishment is required to be given to him yet keeping in view the circumstances of the case, I feel that great injustice would be done to his four children, two of whom are girls hardly aged 6 years and 4 years, in case a harsh view is taken....A great scholar once said 'Justice has to be Tempered with Mercy'.

"Convict Maya Deen is hence sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life and fine to the tune of Rs 10,000 for the offence under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code," the judge said. According to the prosecution, on November 29 last year, Pitampura resident Maya Deen murdered his wife by pouring kerosene oil upon her and setting her on fire.

She had received 90 per cent burn injuries. It said he burnt Manju alive as he was having suspicion on her character that she was having a relation with another man.

The neighbours and children of the couple had told the court that Maya Deen was a habitual drunkard and he used to beat his wife frequently and on the day of incident, he had again quarrelled with the victim and, thereafter, poured kerosene oil upon her and set her on fire.

During the trial, Maya Deen had claimed innocence saying he had asked his wife to prepare some sweets for him due to which she got annoyed and burnt herself in the kitchen.

Rape case convict's claim turns false after bone test

Thane (Maharashtra): A bone ossification test conducted on a rape case convict, who had earlier claimed that he was a minor at the time of crime, has revealed that he was around 20-year-old when he committed the act in 2011.

The bone ossification test report was submitted to the district court here yesterday. The accused, originally from Rajasthan, had been arrested on charge of raping a six-year-old girl at Bhayander in the district in November 2011.

The trial in the case had begun in February 2013, which got over early last month. During the hearing, the victim had told the court that she had been lured by the accused to a public toilet, where she was raped.

On September 5, the court convicted him. However, just before the court pronounced the quantum of punishment, the accused claimed that he was a juvenile at the time of crime. Lawyers representing the convict supported the arguments and presented his school leaving certificate, which mentioned his date of birth as May 15, 1994.

Besides, the birth certificate issued by a village sarpanch in Rajastan, was submitted in the court bearing the same date. However, Assistant Public Prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh challenged the argument and told the Additional Sessions Judge M C Khadke that the accused was 20-years-old at that time.

The prosecution then moved an application in the court seeking permission to conduct a bone ossification test on the accused to ascertain his date of birth. The public prosecutor also challenged the birth certificate submitted by the defence counsel.

The prosecution, however, sought clarification in the case and summoned the sarpanch.

"Following the court summons, the village sarpanch attended the hearing recently and later admitted that the birth date certificate submitted could have been fabricated. He said the person who had signed the certificate was never the village head and held no authority to issue this document," Deshmukh said.

The court will now decide the quantum of sentence. Currently, a person below 18 years of age is treated as a juvenile and under the Juvenile Justice Law, the maximum punishment is three years' confinement at a reformatory home.
