Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League has backtracked from its earlier position to limit the width of National Highway expansion in the state to 30 metres and opted for  45 metres.

IUML national secretary E.T. Mohammad Basheer told reporters on Thursday that the state government  was unable to convince the National Highway Authority of India to give exemption to  Kerala with 30-metre width.

Therefore, the party has no option but to accept  the 45-metre width stipulated by NHAI, Basheer said. PWD Minister V.K. Ibrahim Kunju also expressed the same view  in Kochi on Thursday.

Basheer, however, called for proper compensation to for land acquisition.
