BangaloreCity Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar expressed his dissatisfaction over BBMP’s unscientific methods in laying speed-breakers.
After inaugurating the ‘Sugama Safewalk’, a programme with the focus on pedestrian safety, on Wednesday, he said that there is a need to sensitise BBMP officials about their role in road safety.

“In other cities, speed-breakers are laid mostly at cross roads. But in Bangalore, they are seen even on main roads. It neither helps in controlling speed nor accidents. Officials should get a report from technical experts and then decide on laying road humps in a scientific way,” Auradkar said.

The commissioner said that he would ask traffic police to chalk out a programme to educate BBMP officials and corporators about their role in road safety.

“There is a need that all agencies should work together to make our roads safer,” he added, expressing concern that pedestrians were more vulnerable on roads.

The ‘Sugama Safewalk’ pilot project has been launched at seven high-risk areas for pedestrians in the city, which have been identified by the traffic police.

The project has been launched at Trinity Circle, Siddapura Junction to 10th cross, Madivala police station junction to Ayyappa Temple junction, Lalbagh West Gate junction, Havanoor junction, Yeshwanthpur junction and Esteem Mall near Yelahanka.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B. Dayananda, BBMP Special Commissioner M. Yashwanth and other officials were present.
