Rajahmundry: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy inaugurated a housing colony taken up at a cost of Rs 10 crores under Integrated Housing and Slum Development programme during his visit here on Saturday.

The CM laid foundation stones for construction of two social welfare hostels at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore each near the Government Arts College grounds.

Later, while taking part in Rachchabanda-III programme, the CM gave away ration cards and coupons to 8,604 beneficiaries, pensions to 2,098 persons comprising the aged, disabled and widows. He distributed house sanction letters to 800 beneficiaries.

Taking part in Rachchabanda-III programme held at Subramanyam Grounds here on Saturday, the CM said that in the phase-I and II of the mass contact programme held earlier, nearly 61 lakh families were given away pensions and ration cards at a cost of Rs 6,100 crore.

Under phase-III, the CM said that they were going to give away 19 lakh ration cards and pensions to nearly 8.70 lakh beneficiaries and added that 13.65 lakh houses would also be given away in which nearly 10 lakh houses would be allotted to beneficiaries from SC and ST communities.

The CM said that when he assumed power, there were arrears worth several thousand crores of rupees with regard to scholarships to the students, input subsidy to the farmers and even sanction of cash prize to the sports persons who won several medals at national events, were pending for long. He said that he released nearly Rs 9,000 crore to settle down all the pending issues and provide benefit to various categories of beneficiaries.

Referring to East Godavari, the CM said taking into consideration the quantum of loss of crops suffered by the farmers especially during Nilam cyclonic storm, they enhanced the input subsidy to Rs 10,000 per hectare and added that it was benefiting nearly three lakh farmers in the district.

Out of the proposed disbursal of Rs 139 crore as input subsidy to the farmers in the district, so far 80% of it was already given away to the farmers. Nearly 1.63 lakh farmers got insurance claims settled.
