Cancer patient commits suicide in Hyderabad hospital's bathroom

Hyderabad:
A 33-year-old woman, who was suffering from cancer, committed suicide in the bathroom of Asian Institute of Gastro Enterology in Panjagutta police limits here on Sunday.

The deceased, J. Shivani, a native of Udgir of Maharashtra, was admitted to the hospital on November 10. She was reportedly suffering from intestinal cancer. 

On Sunday morning she went to the bathroom and committed suicide by hanging from the ventilator. On information, Panjagutta police reached the spot and shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital mortuary. Further investigations are on.

Girl shot at for opposing eve-teasing in UP

Muzaffarnagar: A college girl was allegedly shot at by her friend and his two accomplices when she opposed eve-teasing by them at Goharni village in Shamli district, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when the girl, a BSc final year student, was going with a male friend on a motorbike, they said. The victim was rushed to a hospital in a serious condition, from where she was referred to Meerut.

Police has registered a case of attempt to murder against the three youths. Of the three, the girl's friend Mukesh Choudhry is already in police custody while two are absconding. The two absconding youths are Mukesh's friend, police said.

Puducherry: The Child Welfare Com­mi­ttee has directed the Puducherry police to take action against a labourer for allegedly molesting his seven-year-old daughter over the last few months. The shocking incident came to light after the victim and her mother, also a labourer, hailing from Thilaspet, approached the Child Welfare Committee.

“The father threatened the girl with dire consequences if she informed her mother about the incident, Dr Vidya Ramkumar, chairperson, CWC, Puducherry told Deccan Chronicle.

The victim disclosed to her friend that her father had been repeatedly molesting her. The victim’s friend in turn complained to her grandmother and the girl’s mother, who alerted volunteers at Child Line.

Family held for smuggling ganja

Chennai: The police arrested four persons of the same family, three of them women, for illegally storing around 20 kilograms of ganja in a house near Red Hills on Saturday.

The police said they had received a tip-off about illegal ganja business being run from a house at Bala Ganesan nagar in Red Hills. Acting on the information, the Sholavaram police formed a special team and conducted a surprise raid at the house on Saturday morning.

Four sacks of ganja, weighing 5 kg each, were seized from the house during the raid, a police official said. The arrested were identified as Valliammal, her daughter Parvathy, son Ravi and a relative, Kala.

Investigations revealed that they used to smuggle the ganja from Andhra Pradesh by train and make them into small 100 gram packets and sell in the areas around Red Hills and nearby places. The four of them have since been arrested and further investigations are on, the police said, adding that the seized ganja is worth Rs 3 lakh.

Missing boy found killed inside HAL premises

Bengaluru: A 12-year-old boy, who went missing under mysterious circumstances on November 8, was found murdered in a thicket on the HAL premises on Saturday morning.

The police identified the victim as Naveen Kumar, a standard six student of a primary school run by Kairali Niketan Education Trust in Islampura. He was the eldest son of Mai Alagan and Dakshayani, who are from Tamil Nadu.

Alagan works at the Foundry and Forge Division of HAL. Naveen was their eldest son. They also have a daughter, Gayatri, who studies in standard five in the same school.

On November 8 evening, Naveen left home to play. He was last seen flying kites near Reddy Palya with some boys from a slum.

He did not return home that night and his parents search­ed but could not find him. Alagan approached the police the next day and filed a missing complaint. He also issued an advertisement in newspapers about his missing son by furnishing the contact details and the photo.

On Saturday morning, he received a call from a PCO. The caller claimed that he collected Alagan’s number from the advertisement. The caller said that he saw a decomposed body near a groove and suspected that it could be of the missing boy.

The police and parents rushed to the spot immediately.

The parents identified the body based on the clothes and footwear Naveen wore. He had also injured two of his fingers while bursting fire crackers, which also helped the parents identify him. The body was shifted to Bowring Hospital for the postmortem, the police said.

Naveen’s face was beyond recognition as he was bludgeoned to death. The killers had covered the body with grass. The exact cause for the murder is not known and it is said that Alagan did not have rivalry with anybody.

“We suspect that Naveen might have had a fight with the boys from the slum which could have ended in the murder,” the police said.

Khammam: A four-year-old girl went missing from the government hospital in Khammam in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

Urmila, daughter of C. Venkanna and Dhanalakshmi of Burada Raghavapuram, was with her mother at the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre where her 15-month-old brother is being treated for malnutrition.

Dhanalakshmi found the girl missing when she woke up at midnight.

The police learnt that a person wearing a monkey cap was seen going out of the hospital with a child. It is learnt that the hospital management turn off the CCTV cameras between midnight and 5 am.

Madurai: An alleged homosexual relationship drove a young girl in Madurai to end her life.

Police sources said a 20-year-old girl, who graduated in B.A. Economics from a city college, eloped with her childhood friend, a graduate in Computer Science, on October 4, following which her parents lodged a girl missing complaint with the Sellur police.

Meanwhile, a habeas corpus petition was also filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras high court praying that the girl be produced before it.

ater, the police traced the duo and produced them before the court after which they were taken home by their parents who, on coming to know about their intimacy, scolded them, a policeman investigating the case said.

The Economics graduate was found in a depressed mood ever since she was taken home and had been grumbling that her friend was not talking to her, the police said. As she was trying for a job, she had sent her father to take a photocopy of her resume on Thursday. When he returned home, he found her hanging.

The Sellur police, investigating the case, found a suicide note purportedly written by the girl.

The three-page note, according to the police, said she and her friend developed a close relationship and lived together in Dindigul for a while after they ran away from home. But they were traced by the police and handed over to their parents.

Bengaluru: A 25-year-old man surrendered before Parappana Agrahara police after killing his wife on Friday night.

The police identified him as Arun Kumar, a resident of Meenakshi Layout. At around 9.15 pm, he told the police he killed his wife Blessey (23), suspecting her fidelity.

The couple were married a year-and-half ago. He claimed he was aware of his wife’s illicit relationship with a man named Naveen.

The couple used to fight often and it is said that Blessey started threatening him to go and live with Naveen.

On Friday afternoon, they fought again and Arun walked out. In the evening when he came back, he found his wife messaging someone she claimed was Naveen. Enraged, Arun slapped her and hanged her with her dress.

After this, he locked the house and went to a nearby wine shop. From there, he came straight to the police station and surrendered.

The police said, “To ascertain his claim, we took him to his house and saw the body lying on the bed in the bed room.”

Gulbarga: A gang of six dacoits looted a branch of a gold finance company at gun point in Gunj on Saturday.

The incident occurred at Muthoot Finance Company around 9.30 am.

The police said two people entered the branch office. After inquiring about formalities involved in mortgaging a gold chain, they went down purportedly to bring a proof of their identity asked for by officials.

A few minutes later, they returned with four others carrying guns. They threatened the watchman and other staff and decamped with gold jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore. IGP Wazir Ahmed, SP Amit Singh and other cops visited the spot.

The police are trying to get clues from the CCTV cameras at the office.

Bengaluru: Tired of fighting and suspecting each other’s fidelity, a couple hung themselves from a ceiling fan using the same saree at their home on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Murthy (32) and Geetha (28), residents of Janatha Colony, JJ Nagar.

They have three sons and a daughter. Murthy was an employee at a private firm, while Geetha had begun a small chit-fund business with her sister.

Murthy, reportedly did not like the idea of this business and repeatedly advised her against it. However, Geetha did not pay heed, resulting in many fights between the couple. Moreover, they each suspected the other’s fidelity. 

Cops suspect that the couple had a heated argument on Friday night, following which they took the decision to end their lives.

After dropping off their daughter at Geetha’s sister’s house and sending their sons to play, the couple allegedly locked their door and hung themselves. Neighbours rushed them to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Chennai: The city police on night patrol detained four persons for being in possession of fake US dollars, worth Rs 10 lakh, and fake gold coins in Kondithope, near George Town, on Friday.

Investigations revealed that they had planned to cheat another person using the fake goods, the police said. Seven Wells police on night patrol detained the four persons lurking suspiciously near the cooperative bank, George Town, in Kondithope.

As they had given contradictory replies when the police questioned them, they were grilled further and it was found that they were in possession of US dollars worth Rs 10 lakh.

The police seized them and it was found that they were bogus and also seized a few gold coins from them. The four persons were identified as Prabhakaran, 40, of Thoothukudi, Pon Isakki of Tirunelveli, Ashok Kumar and Muhammad Hussain of Red Hills.

Coimbatore: The railway police seized Rs 40 lakh unaccounted money from a 34-year-old man at Coimbatore railway junction on Saturday early morning.

The railway police said Pratheep Krishnan Patel (34), a gold merchant of Kerala, was a native of Maharashtra. He had been in gold business in Kerala for the past several years.

On Saturday, around 6.30 am, the railway police personnel, who were on duty at the Coimbatore railway junction, found a man with a bag at the junction entrance, moving in a suspicious manner towards the platform. With their antennas going up, the police stopped and questioned him.

Chennai: A 23-year-old man, whose car ran amok hitting a series of vehicles parked by the roadside in Chetput during the wee hours of Saturday, was caught by the public and handed over to the police after he tried to escape claiming to be the kin of a state minister.

According to the police, the man, identified as Dinesh, a native of Erode, had landed a driver’s job in Chennai only a couple of days ago and was driving the car near Appa Samy Garden First Street in Chetput when he lost control and hit a series of two-wheelers and autorickshaws parked along the roadside.

“The furious residents immediately surrounded him and the driver, sensing trouble, tried to escape by saying that he was a minister’s son. However, during our investigations, he confessed to have lied,” a police officer said.

The car has been seized and Dinesh has been remanded in custody, the police added.

Rs10 lakh cash seized at airport

Chennai:
Customs sleuths on Saturday detained five passengers at the Chennai airport and seized Rs 10 lakh from them.

According to airport sources, the custom officials detained the five passengers, who were to travel to Singapore on an Air India flight, on a tourist visa. The baggage check revealed that the five were carrying unaccounted cash of Rs 10 lakh hidden among the shirt folds, sources said.

They were identified as Muhammad Pasha and Salauddin of Ramanathapuram, Prakash, Mohammad and another Mohammad of Sivagangai district. Custom officials have detained them and are enquiring further after seizing the cash from them.
