Seven Years After Pulwama: Nation Remembers Fallen Heroes

The deadly terror strike was launched by a suicide bomber on a CRPF convoy of troops along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama

February 14, 2026 marks seven years of the deadly Pulwama terror attack, one of the most fatal terror attacks in India’s recent history, that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on duty. The deadly terror strike was launched by a suicide bomber on a CRPF convoy of troops along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. An ultra-modified vehicle laden with explosives was driven into a bus transporting CRPF troops. The explosion killed 40 soldiers and injured more than 35 others, some of them critically.

The attacker, Adil Ahmad Dar, was linked to the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which claimed responsibility. The incident triggered nationwide grief and anger across the country. The scale of the Pulwama attack deeply influenced the course of Indian politics, military policy, and diplomacy. Following the attack on the CRPF, tensions sharply escalated between India and Pakistan. On 26 February 2019, the Indian Air Force carried out airstrikes near Balakot, targeting what authorities described as militant training facilities.

The tragedy also led to tighter security measures, increased intelligence coordination, and renewed national debate on counter-terror strategy and regional stability. Following the attack, India has increased the number of security forces deployed in sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir.

Since then, February 14 has been observed as ‘Black Day’ to commemorate the martyred heroes and honor their ultimate sacrifice. Every year, the nation pays tribute to the fallen personnel and contemplates the perpetual warfare against terrorism.

Ahead of the seventh anniversary of the devastating attack, Jammu and Kashmir Police have been carrying out surprise checks in busy areas in Srinagar and other places.
