Table tennis championships: Nikhat Banu bows out in pre-quarters
Facing off against Mousumi Paul, Nikhat took the match down to the wire before eventually losing 3-4.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s hope Nikhat Banu went down fighting in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles event at the senior national and inter-state table tennis championships being played at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, on Saturday.
Facing off against Mousumi Paul, Nikhat took the match down to the wire before eventually losing 3-4 (8-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 11-13, 8-11, 4-11). After losing the opening game 8-11, Nikhat fought back splendidly to pocket the next three games 11-8, 12-10, 11-9. However, Mousumi kept her cool, clinching the last three games 13-11, 11-8 and 11-4 to seal a quarterfinal berth.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles Round of 16, Achanta Sharath Kamal put on a dominant display of table tennis, thrashing Lalrin Puia of Mizoram 4-1 (12-14, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4). After losing the opening game 12-14, Sharath came back in ferocious fashion to win four straight games.
