Efforts on to contest petitions challenging quota matrix: SEC

KALABURAGI: Stating that efforts are underway to vacate the writ petitions filed in the high court and its bench in Kalaburagi challenging the reservation matrix of seats, State Election Commissioner P.N. Srinivasachari on Friday declared that the elections to the taluk as well as zilla panchayats would be held only after getting the court order.

Earlier, there was speculation that these polls would be held in the second week of February wiht even political parties starting preparations.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr Srinivasachari, who was here to review the preparations being made in the six districts of Kalaburagi revenue division for holding elections, said the advocates of the Commission as well as the state government were taking all measures to get the stay vacated.

“We will not immediately announce the dates for holding the election. We will wait for the court orders and proceed keeping the court directions in view”, he added.

Asked whether the Commission was contemplating holding elections in the districts where the stay order was not applicable, Mr Srinivasachari replied in the negative.

“The Commission proposes to hold elections for all taluk panchayats and zilla panchayats in the entire state together. We will wait for the court order and follow its directions in this regard”, he said declining to comment further as the matter was before the court.

Mr Srinivasachari made it clear that the Commission had begun preparations for holding the elections in the state.

“I have already completed the review in three divisions with senior officers of the revenue, police, excise and other departments concerned,” Mr Srinivasachari said.
