Boxes, lights and photos

The boxes represent a journey in one's lifetime.

If you had to represent Hyderabad with only four things, what would they be? Ask artist Saisheela Kuresham and she’ll show you her interactive new media work that’s on display at Krishnakriti.

As curious guests opened each of the four boxes, they were welcomed with a sound recording and a memory each. Memories that were represented through items that represent Hyderabad — cups used for Irani chai, ittar, photos from a bygone era and yes bangles. This sound installation at the ‘Image, Memory and Visuality’ exhibition at CCRT, Madhapur, was one of the four art installations on display.

Artist Shravan Kumar’s installation titled ‘Renaissance and Reminiscence’, showcased photos of the past and present that together complete a picture of Hyderabad. At the centre of the verandah is a huge stack of boxes that were bought from the gallis of the Old City by artist Anila Kumar G. “These boxes are a metaphor for stored memories, in the form of images and sounds. The boxes represent a journey in one’s lifetime,” he explained.

There is also a simple installation of images of the city’s famous architectural sites, created on acrylic sheet. “For the process I used acrylic sheets and with LED lights we did a chemical treatment and through that I created the various monuments. When the LED lights are switched on, only the white areas of the monuments are highlighted, the rest of the sheet remains transparent,” said Asgar Ali Md, who is doing his MA from JNTU.
