Telangana: US starts hotline for Indian students

Helpline number to assist students to select the right universities has been rolled out.

Hyderabad: Education USA, the US department of state network of over 400 international student advising centres in 170 countries, including seven in India, has advised students opting for technical and management courses to choose regional accredited universities in the US to avoid deportation.

It launched a toll-free helpline number to assist students to select the right universities in the US. Students can contact the toll-free number 1800-103-1231 from Monday to Friday for any advise on US universities. It asked students not to opt for jobs in the US under CPT/ OPT without an authorisation letter from the university.

The US has national accreditations and regional accreditations. “The US is divided into eight regions geographically. National accreditation pertains to religious faith-based universities and vocational programmes and regional accredited pertain to technical institutions. It's better to opt for regional accredited universities,” said Ms Piya Bahadur, regional officer, US-India Educational Foundation. The foundation operates from the US Consulate in the city and provides free counselling to students.
