Tamil Nadu: George Town’s old buildings to go
CHENNAI: The Chennai corporation on Thursday informed the Madras high court that all endeavours will be made to demolish old buildings, which were in dilapidated condition in George Town (GT) area within three months.
Counsel for Chennai corporation made this submission when a contempt petition filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy came up for hearing before a Division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana.
Ramaswamy said that in an order on his petition on October 7, the high court had stated that if the owners of the buildings were willing to pay for the demolition, corporation officials could proceed with the matter in coordination with police after serving notices on the owners. However, this order had not been complied with. Hence, he filed the present contempt petition.
Treating as closed the contempt petition, the Bench said corporation counsel submitted there were inter se proceedings between the land lords and the tenants.
“In our view, that would be an aspect to be decided in those proceedings. But unless the tenants have interdicts in respect of demolition of the building, mere pending of the proceedings cannot be an answer”, the Bench added.
