Chennai: A retired police officer has approached the Madras high court to direct the state government to dispose of his representation requesting the government to get free of cost 2 mbps bandwidth from service providers for connecting the state capital with all districts.
A Division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana before whom the PIL filed by J Mohanraj, also general secretary of Jebamani Janatha Party, came up for hearing, directed the state government to dispose of his representation dated July 4, 2015, within a month and file a compliance report.
The petitioner said by an order dated May 4, 2000, the state government had permitted service providers to undertake road cutting on the condition that they should provide 2mbps bandwidth for government services free of cost during the project period.
However, they failed to comply with the condition, resulting in loss of several crores of rupees to the exchequer, he alleged.
He said the government had already lost 15 years out of the initial license period of 20 years.
“During this period, neither the government bothered to get the free connectivity nor the service providers worried about providing the facility.
It is nothing but Himalayan corruption”, he alleged.
