Interviews in midst of head-banging at Madras IIT

Outside the interview rooms, some stood alone fidgeting with their notes.

Chennai: While at one end of the IIT campus, students in shorts strummed their guitar strings singing their lungs out, at the other end nervous graduates clad in formal wear awaited their turn for the placement interview.

Since the placement sessions were postponed after the floods hit Chennai last month, the annual IIT fest as well as the placements clashed this year. While some exited the placement building with frowns there were others like Venkatraman who rushed down the stairs to his friends who were keen to know where he had been posted.

“I got the pay package I asked for. It doesn’t matter where they post me I’m just so excited about landing the job,” he told them.
Outside the interview rooms, some stood alone fidgeting with their notes and there were others who were being pushed by their friends to attend more interviews so they can land a job.

Several students also huddled together near the notice board, where the names of selected student were put out, and anxiously discussed their next steps.

Yellaling M, an electrical engineering student, stood with his friend awaiting his interview, “I was a little worried about the kind of questions that would be asked but I’m glad that they are pretty straight to the point. They are testing us only based on our knowledge of the subject and how we are effectively able to apply it. They are not asking us too many complicated questions, which is a good thing.”

A total of 286 students have been placed in various companies thus far. While many start-ups have approached the students for placements, core engineering companies still stole the show the first three days of the placements.

According to Babu Vishwanathan, training and placement advisor, students seemed to prefer core companies as they are more organised and structured. However, since many start-ups are looking for employees Babu said the university might conduct a separate placement mela just for start-ups and a separate one for core companies during the next academic year.
