Bengaluru: Two pose as cops, fleece couples
Bengaluru: The Thalghattapura police have arrested a former home guard and his associate in connection with a robbery case after the duo posed as cops and extorted money from a couple by making them withdraw money from an ATM. The incident took place on the Nice Road on December 19.
The accused has been identified as Raghu, 29 and Govindu, 43, both hailing from Ramanagara, and they were arrested on Tuesday. They have recovered Rs 52,000 in cash, a car, which was used to commit the crime and khaki pants, which they wore to pose as cops. Raghu was working as a car driver and Govindu was working as a lorry helper. Raghu had previously worked as a Home Guard for two years before being terminated from the job after a case of robbery was registered against him.
Raghu along with his associate used to pose as cops and extort lonely couples. He was previously involved in two similar incidents and a case was registered in Ramanagar rural and Rajajeshwari Nagar police stations.
On December 19, he along with Govindu posing as cops waylaid Varun, a software engineer and his female colleague, who were going in a car. They told them that they were policemen and asked the couple to come to the police station for “causing nuisance in public”. The complainant tried to reason with them but in vain.
A senior police officer said, “The complainant sensed something suspicious about the men and approached the police. We analysed similar such cases and found that two cases with same modus operandi was reported in Ramanagar rural and Rajarajeshwari Nagar, in which Raghu was arrested. We confirmed that he was the one who had committed the act. We picked up the accused and questioned him, who confessed to the crime.”
