Table tennis: Telangana bow out of Nationals
Men were trounced by Gujarat 0-3 in the pre-quarterfinals while the women went down to North Bengal 1-3.
Hyderabad: The Telangana men’s and women’s sides made a quiet exit from the team event of the senior national and inter-state table tennis championships being played at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, on Wednesday.
The men were trounced by Gujarat 0-3 in the pre-quarterfinals while the women went down to North Bengal 1-3, also in the Round of 16. While the men’s side went down without a fight, Nikhat Banu posted the only win for the women’s team when she defeated Sagarika Mukherjee 11-5, 11-4, 6-11, 11-3. However, Nikhat couldn’t win her reverse singles match while teammates Naina Jaiswal and Varuni Jaiswal too tasted defeat in their respective matches.
Meanwhile, the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board, Reserve Bank of India, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal sailed into the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, PSPB blanked Madhya Pradesh 3-0; RBI defeated North Bengal 3-1; Tamil Nadu upset last year’s semifinalists Maharash-tra ‘A’ by the same scoreline and West Bengal, runners-up from last year, whitewashed Karnataka 3-0.
