This day, that year: When Imran Khan bid goodbye to Test cricket

On January 7 (1992), the Pakistan legend called it a day against Sri Lanka in Faisalabad.

Mumbai: He came out of retirement to win the World Cup for Pakistan in 1992, two months before he announced retirement from Tests. On January 7, legendary Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan called it a day.

Khan’s career began in 1971 against England in Birmingham. Though he scored five and remained wicketless, his talent gained prominence under the watchful eyes of Intikhab Alam – the then Pakistan skipper.

Nonetheless, after 21 years, Khan decided to hang up his boots in the third Test against Sri Lanka in Faisalabad. He scored 22 and a duck, didn’t bowl but Pakistan won by three wickets under his leadership.

Khan troubled all opponents with his swing but he was most successful against India. Out of 362 Test wickets, 40 came against India in 1982-83.

Khan also hit six Test centuries and 18 half-centuries.
