Maoists kill TD leader, ex-sarpanch in Vizag district of AP
Visakhapatnam: Continuing their killing spree to scare local political leaders over bauxite mining in Vizag Agency, left wing extremists killed a Telugu Desam leader Sagina Venkata Ramana, a former sarpanch, in Jerrela, GK Veedhi mandal, in Vizag Agency late on Tuesday night.
This is the second murder by Maoists in the last two days in Vizag Agency.
On Monday night, the extremists had killed Pangi Sivaiah, 36, former militia commander, after branding him a police informer near Sariapalle area under Munchangiput mandal.
Maoists claimed that they eliminated Venkata Ramana, 30, for not quitting the party and for supporting bauxite mining. Sources said that Venkata Ramana, a resident of Chintapalle, had gone to his native village Jerrela on Tuesday to meet the family of his uncle who passed away recently.
Over 20 armed Maoists accompanied by over 200 militia members dragged Venkata Ramana out of the house, tied him to a pole and axed him to death. Chitapalle DSP R. Raghavendra said Maoists looted the house and took away around '50,000 in cash, about 20 bags of coffee and nine goats before damaging setting it on fire.
The state had recently issued GO No. 97 allowing bauxite mining in Jerrela.
Following this, the Maoists warned TD leaders to quit the party and elected posts and join the agitation against bauxite mining.
The DSP said that though Venkata Ramana was not a supporter of bauxite mining, the rebels murdered him citing a resolution passed by the Jerrela panchayat in favour of bauxite mining when he was sarpanch.
