IIT placements begin post floods with 23 companies

Officials said a total of 320 companies have agreed to come for placement.

Chennai: The IIT placement, postponed in view of the December deluge, began on Wednesday. It will continue till January 14. On the first day, 23 companies visited the campus. Officials said a total of 320 companies have agreed to come for placement. As the date also coincides with the commencement of the cultural fest Sarang, many final year students consider themselves to be the unluckiest batch.

There were two slots, one was the morning session, which started from 7 am to 2 pm, and the evening session from 4 pm to 11 pm. According to Babu Vishwanathan, training and placement advisor, there were nearly 70 offers. “This time, we can’t reveal the pay packages, it was mainly domestic ones. We are happy with the offers as we did not expect so much,” he said. He added that companies like Intel Airbus, Flipkart and Ziome were among those who visited the campus on Wednesday.

Ramu Rajeev, a final year student from mechanical engineering who sat for the test for core aerospace company Airbus, said he didn’t get to sit for the interview. Explaining the reason, he said the test had to be finished before 12:30 pm. “Out of 30 students, they selected only seven. Many of them could not sit for the interview. Otherwise, my test went well though the paper was tough,” he said. He added that since he has to study for the placement tomorrow, he couldn’t attend the fest. “It is so unfortunate that because of flood the placement got postponed and we can’t enjoy the fest,” he said.

Further, Aditya U, cultural secretary of Sarang, who was waiting for the interview in the morning session, said, “I just hope I nail this interview so that I don’t have to sit for any examination tomorrow. As I also have to focus on the fest. We are the unluckiest batch that the fest and the placement is at the same time.”
