A transgender band rocks it!
Often seen standing at traffic signals looking for some hope and kindness, the third gender is ignored by most, tolerated by some and misunderstood by others.
A group of six transgender sung their own rendition of Pharrell Williams hit song Happy, titled Hum Hain Happy. And the end result is nothing but amazing.
The video starts with Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma introducing the six-member band. As a group of transgenders walk into a crowded street, she says, “I believe that all living beings should be treated with the same respect and dignity. This song is one way to get everyone to tune in to that one thought and beat. Because often where words fail, music speaks.”
The video progresses with the transgenders trying to fit into society, only to be constantly looked down upon. The scene in the office where everyone shudders at the sight of a transgender is captured very beautifully, eliciting empathy towards them.
The idea to break the stereotype is very commendable and the fact that they come off happy does justice to the title of the song.
The video could prove to be a game changer as it shows the world a bit more welcoming to the third gender.
The fact that this initiative is being backed by Yash Raj Films’ youth film wing Y–Film, could further help the cause.
Singer Sonu Nigam, who will feature with the band in six of their music videos, was present at the launch. Explaining the initiative, Sonu said, “When I was quite popular in the ’90s, I always wanted to do something for the transgender community. I love their innocence, the way they would sing my songs. When I was little, I used to wonder ‘what if I had been born this way?’ This was why I said yes to the initiative.”
