Chennai: A 32-year-old software professional in Keezhkattalai near Madipakkam in south Chennai died of burns and suffocation in his house when he was trapped in fire and smoke as he walked back inside the apartment after having successfully brought his parents out to safety early Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hari Narayanan, son of Muthuswamy and Vasanthi. Hari Narayanan was working as software professional in a private firm in Taramani and his 9-month pregnant wife, Gomathi, had gone to her parents’ home in Velachery for delivery.
On Monday night, apart from Hari Narayanan and his parents, his sister’s 6-year-old daughter was sleeping in the first floor apartment belonging to family in Anna Nagar in Keezhkattalai. Hari was sleeping in one bedroom while his parents and niece were sleeping in the other. According to the police, the family woke up around 2 am to thick smoke engulfing the interiors of the house from a suspected short circuit and subsequent fire in the main switch area.
Hari Narayanan somehow managed to extricate the other three members of the family. He went back daring the fire and smoke to retrieve a set of keys, but failed to return leaving his parents in a state of shock.
By the time fire and rescue team arrived and spotted Hari Narayanan on the floor, he was dead. He had some burns and possibly died of suffocation because of thick smoke. His body was later shifted to Chromepet GH.
