Nearly 2,000 left homeless by earthquake in northeast India
Guwahati: Authorities are offering financial help to rebuild damaged homes of nearly 2,000 people after a strong earthquake that struck India's remote northeast along the border with Myanmar early Monday.
L. M. Khaute, the Manipur state police chief, says at least eight people were killed and more than 100 injured by falling debris when the 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the state.
Residents said Tuesday they have moved temporarily to the homes of their relatives and friends while state government officials assessed damage to their homes in Imphal, the state capital, the Tamenglong district that was the quake epicenter, and two other districts.
Khaute said rescuers have not found anyone trapped in debris.
The tremor left large cracks in walls, damaged a bridge on the outskirts of the capital and caused a newly constructed six-story building to collapse. The damage was limited as the region is dotted with small houses with few tall buildings.
Imphal residents said furniture was knocked over and books fell off shelves as the ground swayed for almost a minute.
