My exams are still my top priority: Malavika Nair

Malavika Nair talks about her education, the upcoming exams, a career in the movies and the future...
Malavika Nair, who made her debut with the film Yevade Subramanyam in Telugu, has celebrated a milestone event in the industry. The actress is now doing her second Telugu film Kalyana Vaibhogame directed by Nandini Reddy and also celebrated her 18th birthday with the unit.
“Yes, I’m officially a major now and I can have a bank account to save my money,” says Malavika.
The actress is also studying for her standard 12 final exams in Delhi. “I am leaving today as I don’t want to discontinue my studies. My finals are in April,” she says.
She adds that earlier, her father used to select films, but now she can do it on her own. “But I never wanted to become an actress. My roles in the Malayalam films were because of advice from my father. So, that’s how I started acting.”
Her first film as a lead actress was Yevade Subramanyam and after that Malavika got several offers, but she didn’t like any of them. “My top criteria is my role in the film, which should be important. About Kalyana Vaibhogame I personally liked this role and decided to do it.”
She added that when Nandini Reddy narrated the role to her she found the character “cute”.
“See, I’m currently caught between my studies and films. I don’t want to discontinue my education but at the same time I don’t want to miss this film either,” says Malavika. And for this film, she managed to work without disturbing her studies.
The actress is also a good artist and enjoys sketching in her spare time. “I like painting which is why I may opt for the arts after my 12th,” she says.
Director Nandini Reddy has even gifted Malavika a set of colour pencils and a notebook and a bond is forming between the actor and the director. “I do hope my next film, too, is with her,” says Malavika.
But for now, the exams are top priority. “I want to come back only after April (after my exams) and if people forget me during that break it’s fine. Actually, I was frustrated and I didn’t want to act anymore. When I was around 14, people would yell at me for not wanting to act in film. But now, it’s okay and I’m interested. I never thought I would become a lead actress but after Yevade Subramanyam, my thoughts changed,” says Malavika.
The actress says she is playing Divya in Kalyana Vaibhogame. “It’s a love story and explores the before and after in relationships,” she says. And about her resolution for the new year, the actress says it’s going to be about decisions. “Follow my own instincts, whatever it may be,” she adds.
