‘TD aspirant’ tries to end life for seat

Shareef consumed the poisonous cocktail.

Hyderabad: Claiming that he was promised a TD ticket for the forthcoming GHMC polls but was cheated, a man attempted suicide at the office of Jubilee Hills MLA M. Gopinath on Sunday.

Mushtaq Shareef consumed cough syrup mixed with cockroach poison. However, the MLA denied the charge, saying that Shareef was not even a party member.

The 32-year-old Shareef, a resident of Netajinagar in Erragadda, is a businessman. On Sunday afternoon, he, along with about 200 residents of Netajinagar, came to meet the MLA at his office in Jubilee Hills, seeking allocation of the 2BHK houses. Sometime during the wait for the MLA, Shareef consumed the poisonous cocktail. On noticing him, his companions rushed him to a nearby private hospital.

Later, Shareef told the police that he was a social worker and had joined the TD three months ago. He admitted that he had come to meet the MLA seeking the 2BHK houses, but since he couldn’t meet Mr Gopinath, had attempted suicide. Shareef was said to be out of danger.

Mr Gopinath said that Shareef had met him about a fortnight ago, introduced himself as a social worker and wanted to join the TD. He also sought the ticket for Erragadda division.

“He is not a member of the party and we are also not clear about which category the division will be allocated to. So I told him to wait,” said the MLA.

He attributed a political motive behind Sunday’s incident, saying that Shareef asked him for help as he faced a threat to his life from MIM workers.

“He even gave me a letter saying that he faced a threat from MIM workers. If he came for housing flats, why would he attempt suicide,” Mr Gopinath said.

A general diary entry regarding the incident was made at the Jubilee Hills police station.
