Colonies wake up to dirty water
Foul smell is emanating from drinking water.
Hyderabad: Foul smell is emanating from drinking water supplied in Mehdipatnam, Gudimalkapur, Shardanagar Colony and Karwan and more than 40 cases of diarrohea are being recorded from the areas every day. Doctors say they are seeing complete families on a daily basis. Dr Linga Rao, senior general physician at Mehdipatnam, said, “We are seeing grandparents, parents and children from the same house coming with a common complaint of vomiting and loose motions. There is contamination of water. Most families in the area have been reporting with the same symptoms for 15 days.” Srinivas Ambati, vice-president of Sahaya Hastham Organisation in Gudimalkapur, said, “We are not getting Manjeera water but from the Godavari project. The problem has arisen after the Godavari water supply started.”
He said several complaints had been made to the Water Board but they have not taken any action. Different groups of residents have been complaining on a daily basis. Water samples have been handed over to Water Board officers in their Mehdipatnam office but to no avail. Residents have submitted samples of muddy water with white small particles floating in it to the Water Board, said Karwan resident Mohammed Zeeshan.
Dr Laxman Rao, a senior general physician, said, “The increasing cases of diarrohea have scared residents. Senior citizens who are already immune-compromised with diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension are taking long to recover. As a precautionary measure, residents have been asked to strain and boil water before using it for drinking and cooking.”
Water Board director of operations G. Rameshwar Rao said, “There must be some disturbance in the inlet areas to these places due to which this problem has occurred. The problem is not from the main pipeline as water is tested every day. It is in the distribution network at the periphery level where contamination must have occurred. The problem will be attended to immediately but we require a proper address and proper details to check on what is going wrong.”
