‘Operation Gurukulam’ to hit Kochi

The police will inform the school authorities and parents

Kochi: Kochi City Police has decided to launch Operation Gurukulam an initiative of Kottayam Police to seek out and rehabilitate students addicted to drugs, in the city too. They are planning to join hands with the colleges and schools in the city for its successful implementation. City police commissioner M. P. Dinesh said the venture would be launched here soon.

“We successfully initiated it in Kottayam and made several timely interventions. We hope Kochiites will also help us make the city free of drugs,” he said.

“As an initial step, we will be trying to get in touch with the school authorities. In Kottayam, we were able to monitor school going children who cut classes and roam around.”

Through the project, the police will keep a watch over students and take steps to prevent them from indulging in criminal activities. In most cases no legal action would be taken against them. The police will inform the school authorities and parents concerned and caution them.

The police feels, through monitoring the children, they can crack the drug mafia in the city. At present, several college going students and just passed out boys are falling prey to the drug mafia. Recently, cops arrested several youngsters with drug ampules.

Though the project was aimed at the welfare of students, some acts of police breaching privacy like nabbing children from a movie theater were criticised.
