Telangana keeps quota suspense

State keeps reserved wards secret, GMHC poll likely on Jan. 23.

Hyderabad: The state government will most likely announce the mandatory list of division-wise reservations either on Sunday evening or Monday morning, after which the State Election Co-mmission will issue the notification for the GHMC polls on Monday.

It is expected that the polling day would be on January 23. As per the High Court directions, the entire process of GHMC elections including election of the Mayor should be completed before Janu-ary 31, 2016.

IT minister K.T. Rama Rao and state ministers continued their foundation stone-laying spree on Sunday; this could be the last set of government-sponsored programmes before the election notification is issued and the model code of conduct comes into effect.

Foundation stones were laid for several flyovers, skywalks and multi-grade separators at various locations in the city for a total project cost of Rs 900 crore. The list of reserved divisions is a closely held secret with Mr Rama Rao along with four city ministers finetuning it with the municipal administration department.

Sensing the government’s moves, a delegation of leaders from non-TRS parties met officials at the State EC and sought time to study the list of reserved wards. They told SEC secretary Ashok Kumar that would not be fair either for the government or the EC to rush through with the poll notification. They asked the SEC to file an affidavit with the High Court seeking more time for completion of the election process.

Former Congress minister Marri Shashidhar Reddy, who led the delegation, said the intention of the state to declare the quota list and then rush to the EC to issue election notification is not proper.
