Maradu suicide victim was beaten up by police

A human rights organisation, has called for legal action against sub-inspector.

Kochi: Subhash, a 36-year old person, who committed suicide after the Maradu police arrested him on charges of causing public nuisance under the influence of alcohol, has suffered beatings in police custody. The postmortem report of the victim has mentioned that apart from the injuries caused by hanging the body of Subhash had eight other injury marks.

The postmortem report mentioned the areas of these injury marks and the possible reasons for them. All injury marks hinted at the possibility of beatings. Although these injuries were not of a fatal nature the report debunks the police version that Subhash was not subjected to any third degree methods.

Subhash, a construction worker by profession was taken into custody on Saturday night, committed suicide at his residence on Sunday. The local residents alleged that he committed suicide following the humiliation at the hands of the cops taken him to custody.

The Janakeeya Manushayavakasa Prasthanam, a human rights organisation, has called for legal action against PR Santosh, sub-inspector of police in Maradu, accused to taking Subhash into custody. The official has been involved in similar incidents earlier, it said in a statement on Saturday. In the previous case also he was only transferred from Tripunithura to Marad, it pointed out.
