Kerala University to help Lakshadweep augment poultry production

This programme will improve broiler meat and egg production.

Kochi: The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) is foraying into the neighbouring Lakshadweep by launching a poultry and goat entrepreneurship training programme for entrepreneurs of the archipelago in the New Year.

The fully residential programme will start from the third week of January. The department of animal husbandry of Lakshadweep, district panchayat, Kavaratti, and directorate of entrepreneurship and Centre for Advanced Studies in Poultry Sciences of KVASU will implement the programme with an initial allocation of Rs 3 lakh.

Initially, 50 entrepreneurs will be given five days’ training in two batches. The second batch training programme will be held during the first week of February, said Dr T.P. Sethumadhavan, director of entrepreneurship of KVASU.

The training will cover various aspects of poultry entrepreneurship including poultry production, feeding, management, disease control, marketing, broiler management, waste management and backyard rearing and value addition along with entrepreneurship, banking and finance. Goat sector will be covered later.

The training will equip the prospective entrepreneurs to start poultry venture. “Trainees will get the opportunities to visit sustainable models of poultry entrepreneurship in the state. This programme will improve broiler meat and egg production,” said Dr Sethumadhavan.
