CCTVs help cops fix criminals in Hyderabad

Police to install more CCTV cameras in city.

Hyderabad: In the evening of September 23 last year, a team of policemen in civil dress followed three men on the busy road at Abids. Unaware of the police tail, the trio walked around for several minutes recceing the bust-ling market. When they were about to cross the road near Hollywood footwear shop, the cops pounced on them with handcuffs. The trio was taken to police station, where they confessed to having committed at least eight robberies in Hyderabad in 2015 alone.

The crime party of Abids police station started following the trio, who belonged to the notorious Ramji-nagar attention diversion gang, after confirming their identity using their photographs acquired from various CCTV footages at crime scenes.

Each time the gang st-ruck in Abids, the CCTV cameras installed on the streets captured their faces clearly. All Abids police had to do was to take a print out of the grabs and distribute them among the fie-ld staff to search them.

“The gang robbed businessmen by diverting attention by throwing notes on the roads before snatching moneybags from their vehicle or hands. The CCTV footages helped us identify them when they came back again to conduct a recce,” said Inspector K. Srinivas from Abids police station.

Abids is one of the many police stations in Hyderabad where cops can monitor most part of their jurisdiction from the Command Control Room. The CCTV cameras capture all the action, day and night.

Like Abids, cops from several other police stations in the city have also busted cases with the help of CCTVs. According to recent data, police of Hydera-bad Commissionerate solved as many as 134 cases including several property offences with the help of CCTV footage acquired from the streets last year.

The significant reduction in crime rate is also attributed to the installation of hundreds of cameras across the city. Hyderabad police had purchased a video enhancement system to analyse footages without the help of forensic laboratories to avoid inordinate delay in probes.

“Investigation into kidnap cases, property offences, murders, and even traffic accidents now depend on CCTV camera footages. Linking CCTV cameras set up by various private stakeholders with the local police stations has revolutionised crime detection,” a senior police officer from Hyderabad said.

Last year, traders, businessmen and others installed as many as 3,100 CCTV cameras across the city responding to the request of the police. Cops expect to install thousands of more cameras in city.
