AICTE sanctions MCA lateral entry
Thiruvananthapuram: The All-India Council for Technical Education has allowed lateral entry for MCA course also in view of the large number of vacant seats in the colleges.
Students with bachelor’s degree of minimum three years duration in BCA or B.Sc (IT or computer science) with mathematics as a subject at Plus-Two level or at graduate level will be eligible for admission to second-year MCA course up to a maximum of 20 percent of sanctioned intake. This will be above the approved intake. In the union territories of Andaman, Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Damn and Diu, it will be 30 percent.
After the AICTE made this recommendation, the Admission Supervisory Committee on the basis of many complaints received from the MCA colleges, the subject experts and the management representatives constituted a sub-committee to identify the academic deficiencies of the MCA course.
The shortage of students for the MCA course, the necessity of improving the syllabus, the admission irregularities, the failure to adhere to the academic calendar by the universities, failure to declare the results in time and the timely completion of MCA course were identified as some of the reasons for the same. The sub-committee had found that the non- availability of the students in the MCA colleges was due to the outflow of the candidates from Kerala to the neighbouring states.
The committee decided to implement the suggestions for improvement of academic excellence of MCA course from the academic year 2016 onwards. On the basis of the recommendation of the sub-committee, the Admission Supervisory Committee entrusted Lal Bhadur Sastri Institute of Science and Technology to conduct the MCA entrance examination on February 14 this year. It was also decided to follow the pattern of entrance tests like NIMCET, TANCET, AIMCET and other tests conducted by universities like JNU, Delhi and Pune. The rank list will be published within 15 days from the date of the entrance examination.
