Call to start Maoist rehabilitation plan

Centre has asked the states to adopt the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy for Maoists.

Hyderabad: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala have asked the Centre to include the Maoist affected districts in the Security Related Expenditure scheme of MHA so that Maoist movements can be tackled with Central funds.

The Centre has asked the states to adopt the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy adopted by AP. Wayanad, Mallappuram, Kannur, Kozhikode, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad in Kerala, Mangalore, Kudagu, Chikmangalur, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka and Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu have been identified to be vulnerable to Maoist infiltration.

The Tamil Nadu government proposed to include the Nilgiris in the SRE list due to increase in Maoist activities around its borders and sought reimbursement of security expenditures to the tune of Rs 2.4 crore along with Rs 10.11 crore to create infrastructure and service facilities under the Integrated Action Plan.

The AP government, meanwhile, stated that a separate rehabilitation policy would have to be started by the respective state governments to encourage Maoists to surrender. As per the police, an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 25 lakh is given depending on the rank of the surrendering cadres.
