8 zones to 10: Will BBMP get better?

The number of zones in the city will be increased to ten from the present eight.

BENGALURU: In a first step towards reorganising the city's administration and improving the efficiency of the BBMP, the number of zones in the city will be increased to ten from the present eight.

The zones have been redrawn based on the recommendations made by a restructuring committee. "But it is still a proposal and will get implemented only when the BBMP Council approves it," said a BBMP source.

The existing eight zones have been carved out unscientifically. With the city's population touching one crore, it is practical to increase the number of zones to make BBMP services more accessible to Bengalureans and to improve city's administration, the sources said.

City Development Minister K.J. George has approved a proposal sent by former BBMP administrator T.M. Vijay Bhaskar.

“The BBMP Administrative Reforms Committee is studying the recommendation and will take about two months to get the BBMP Council approval. The number of wards will, however, remain at 198,” sources said.
