Everyday foods that are draining your energy levels

Even seemingly healthy-looking options are not really helping you.

So, you thought having a sandwich was harmless? Sorry to burst your bubble but that sandwich may just be the reason you feel so tired and lethargic. That’s right, even so-called healthier options like a fruit smoothie could be the reason behind the dip in your energy levels.

So, here are common everyday food items that don't really make you feel recharged after having them.

Bagels

Bagels score high on glycemic index as they contain 45g or more of refined carbohydrates. High glycemic index foods affect blood sugar insulin levels more than low glycemic index food, which means you get a quick energy burst and then a crash.

Orange juice

Most juices, including orange juice, are really 100 percent juice. They might contain high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavours and colours and even added sugar. Also, juice – especially without the pulp – does not consist of the same levels of fibre, phytochemicals and antioxidants as whole fruit.

Fruit smoothies

Although smoothies have more fibre than fruit juice, they still happen to contain large amounts of natural sugar even if they are made with just fruit. Moreover, fruit smoothies contain not just natural sugar but also added levels of sugar.

Sandwiches

The white bread used in store-bought sandwiches has high levels of refined carbohydrates. As they typically use processed meats, sandwiches also contain various artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. It is better to make your own sandwich at home and add healthy toppings to battle those food cravings.
