Eating potatoes could trigger diabetes, study finds

Experts now warn that people with insulin resistance should reduce potato intake.

Just when you thought that potatoes could not be bad enough, after all those French fries are infamous for adding inches to your waistline, here comes another anti-potato warning. Doctors now warn that consuming potatoes may also increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

The study, which included combined data from three US studies on 70, 773 nurses and 40, 669 male health professionals, was carried out by Dr Isao Muraki and his team. The researchers examined how many servings of potato people ate a week via questionnaires. After four years, they then assessed the data for potato consumption and type 2 diabetes. It was found that people who ate more – whether baked, boiled, mashed or French fries – had an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Dr Muraki went on to advise that potato food consumption should be reduced for people with elevated risk of developing diabetes or insulin resistance, according to a report in the Daily Mail. The findings of this study were published in the online journal Diabetes Care.
