See you online, says Gen Z of Chennai

Smart phones turn out to be most used gadget.

Chennai: With smart phones gaining popularity among young Chennaiites, use of personal computers has declined. Around 85 per cent of youngsters prefer using smart phones over laptops or PCs, which is preferred by 81 per cent of those belonging to Generation Z.

Generation Z (Gen Z), defined as the group born after 1995, is the generation that is almost always online. Gen Z prefer smart phones as the most used gadget, and Twitter is getting popular among them.

These findings were revealed in the TCS Youth Survey 2015, which evaluated over 1,100 students in the age group of 12-18 years in Chennai. About 73 per cent of the respondents to the survey admitted that they spend over an hour everyday online while 34 per cent of them respond to notifications within half an hour of receiving them.There are also teenagers who don’t agree.

A. Athulya, a student of 10th, said, “I don’t own a phone, neither does my twin because our parents want us to focus on studies. Neither of us have Facebook accounts too.”

According to this survey, Facebook leads with 86 per cent users on it followed by Google+ (70%). It was also found that Google+ was more popular among Gen Z Chennai girls (used by 80%) as against Facebook (used by 69%).
