PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry is preparing itself to ring in 2016. Being one of the favourite destinations for new year celebrations in South India, the Union Territory is expecting more tourists this year as New Year celebrations are restricted in Chennai due to recent floods. Puducherry gets maximum number of tourists from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.
A majority of low-budget hotels reached full capacity around middle of December. Most hotels are offering a variety of programmes, including night parties and special dinner to attract visitors.
“Last year, we had around one lakh tourists for new year celebrations in Puducherry. This year, we are expecting not less than 1.25 lakh tourists. “ said R. Mounissamy, director, Pondy tourism.
Tourism department suffered losses to the tune of Rs 14 crore this season due to continuous rain and floods. Many tourist spots and property were also damaged in the rain. But, now the Puducherry tourism department is back to full swing to make the New Year eve a memorable one, he said.
Chunnambar boat house and paradise beach, a favourite new year destination of tourists in Puducherry, is expected to give maximum delight for tourists. The beautification works are almost over. The property of Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) has been given on lease for a day to organise the new year eve celebration in Paradise beach. “New year will be an unforgettable experience for people who visit Puducherry. Though the tourism department is not imposing restrictions on tourists for any kind of celebrations, we will not allow any mischievous activity during the celebrations” the director said.
At the same time, the Puducherry municipality has asked tourists not to litter the beach road on the New Year eve and warned that strict action would be taken against violators. The municipality conducted a beach cleaning programme a few days ago.
