Now row safe, thanks to Ennu Ninte Moideen
Kozhikoe: Taking inspiration from the movie Ennu Ninte Moideen based on a real life story where the protagonist dies in a boat tragedy, Innovation Experience a Thiruvananthapuram–based social venture in association with the College of Engineering Trivandrum has developed a stabilizer which helps to reduce accidents involving travelling boats.
Ferry boats and country boats (without flat bottom) capsize when they lose balance. The stabilizer reduces rolling and chances for capsize. Stabilizers are cone-shaped to ensure smooth ride and fixed on either side of the boat.It is made up of PVC pipe coated with fibre glass. They are filled with water bottles for additional protection.
Speaking to DC, Innovation eXperience Director Shyam Kumar said that the stabilizer could reduce accidents significantly. For motorised boats, the company has also designed the automatic stabilizer which will reduce friction and thereby the use of fuel. It would cost around '5,000- '15,000 to install the facility.
On a pilot basis, the stabilizer will be installed in boats at Amboori in Thiruvananthapuram. A noted Bollywood film director has come up with the promise to bear a portion of the installation cost. “We hope that more people would support this,” Shyam adds.
