Chennai: 12,000 cops for New Year vigil
Chennai: Though New Year celebrations are expected to be low-key this time due to the recent devastation and loss of lives caused by floods in the state, police are not taking any chances and are deploying the usual 12,000 personnel around the city.3
Police has strictly warned people to adhere to all the rules and refrain from drinking and driving. It has also ordered drunk revelers to not cause any nuisance on the streets including bike stunts, over speeding cars and bikes.
Police will be patrolling in all popular spots and party scenes in the city all through New Year’s day. Since many clubs have cancelled their parties this year because of the floods the police are expecting beaches to be more crowded than usual and have deployed nearly 1,000 police personnel in the area.
The public has also been warned against eve-teasing and harassment of women on the streets or other motorists who might be getting back home late in the night. Clubs and party organisers have been asked to not erect any temporary structures, since they have caused accidents in the past.
A notice has been issued to all pubs to not allow their customers to drive back home in drunk conditions and to make arrangements for cab services in the hotel for the customers to avail.
