Techie beats up advocate in court over maintenance
Hyderabad: A US-returned techie beat up an advocate in the Nampally Family Court complex on Tuesday, leading to advocates striking work at some courts Wednesday. The advocate was arguing a maintenance case filed against the accused by his wife, and his style apparently irritated the techie.
The complainant woman was married to software professional Md Abdul Layeeq in 2003. He flew to the US the next year and returned to India after five years -- in 2009. The couple has two children. In 2010, he gave a “talaq” to his wife. Following this, the wife filed a maintenance petition against him in the family court. She also filed separate harassment and domestic violence cases against the man.
Layeeq filed a petition seeking permanent custody of the two kids. Advocate Syed Lateef was arguing the cases on the wife’s behalf. The maintenance case came up for trial on Tuesday before the additional metropolitan sessions judge in the family court.
When the rival parties in the case were called, Layeeq produced in the court a junior advocate to argue the case on his behalf. This was opposed by advocate Lateef. The judge did not accept Layeeq’s request and postponed the hearing to 6 January 2016.
After they came out of the court hall, Layeeq allegedly attacked Lateef from behind. “I was talking to my petitioner and he came from behind and hit me on the neck and my back. He beat me up.
He might be have developed a grudge against me because I was arguing the case against him,” said advocate Lateef. The advocate lodged a complaint with Nampally police. “Since the offence is non-cognizable, we will take action based on the investigation,” said Nampally inspector Madhumohan Reddy.
Advocates boycotted the daily proceedings at Nampally, Rangareddy and Malkajgiri courts and attended to duties by displaying black badges at the City Civil Court, Wednesday, in protest against the attack.
