Crime rate against dalits, women on rise in Telangana
Hyderabad: Crimes against women and Dalits had increased in Telangana in 2015 according to data released by the TS police. Dalits were victims in 1,288 cases this year, against 1,171 in 2014. Of the 1,020 rape victims, 128 were Dalit women.
Cases booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 came down by about 25 per per cent, the data showed. Crimes against women increased by 5.3 per cent, including 1,020 cases of rape.
DGP Anurag Sharma said the significant number of rape cases were different in nature. “Of these, 227 cases were elopement and love-related issues,” Mr Sharma said. Mr Sharma said that the formation of SHE teams in the state had yielded results. These teams had managed to reduce the number of cases where women were harassed by men in public areas.
But... Overall crime rate declined in state
The overall crime rate has dropped by one per cent in Telangana in 2015, as compared to the previous year. DGP Anurag Sharma said there was a significant decrease in dacoities, murder for gain, kidnap and abduction, ordinary thefts and rioting.
However, the number of robbery cases increased from 272 in last year to 322 due to registration of cases of chain- snatching under this act. Cyber crimes too had declined to 634 against 678 last year, Mr Sharma said.
The DGP added that initiatives like mobile applications such as Hawk Eye, lost articles app, stolen vehicle tracking system,work distribution app had helped in increasing police efficiency, preventing crime, and delivering services to the people. Road accidents increased in 2015, with 18,534 cases being reported against 17,339 last year. A total of 6,495 people died in road accidents and 20,922 were injured, against 6,259 dead and 19,241 injured last year.
