Eat, drink and make merry but with caution

You may not be an addict, but there is always an urge to go drink heavily during celebrations.

Bengaluru: Ring in the New Year and make merry, but with caution, advise doctors. “Binge drinking will have two major consequences – first you skip the meal which makes absorption of alcohol into the liver faster and second, it overloads your liver," says Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Clinical Dietician, Head, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Apollo Hospitals.

You may not be an addict, but there is always an urge to go drink heavily during celebrations. “While you celebrate, it is critical that you drink and eat in moderation to avoid any aftereffects of binging,” says Dr Vidyasagar Ramappa, Consultant, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Columbia Asia Hospital, Whitefield.

“Many revelers drink without a break and their livers gets taxed causing bad hangovers and puking," Dr Rohatgi said.

“If you can sip your drinks instead of gulping, or take breaks between drinks, you can avoid becoming inebriated and help reduce your overall alcohol consumption. For example, if you plan on being at a party for 4 hours, have one drink every two hours. Drink water, juice or other nonalcoholic beverages in between if you feel fidgety, or want to continue drinking liquids throughout the holiday event," advises Dr Ramappa.

"Those suffering from cardiovascular problems and low blood pressure should be more cautious," Dr Rohatgi said.
