The good, bad and the not so great

Here’s what the gaming scene had to offer in 2015.

2015 has been a year of ups and downs and of course delays, something that seems to be happening way too often these days. But, of the games, we did get some that were truly exceptional, here is a quick list of the top 5 games that came out in 2015.

What we loved : Ishaan Arya

Bloodborne Platform: PlayStation 4

The spiritual successor to the popular ‘hardcore’ action game Dark Souls, Bloodborne has one purpose and purpose alone – to frustrate you. And it’s not for the faint of heart. Each boss fight comes with a sense of relief, something most AAA games in their entirety cannot replicate. And that feeling remains a constant even after hours of tiring gameplay.

Fallout 4 Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

A lot of people will say Fallout 4 isn’t the same RPG Fallout 3 was and they wouldn’t be wrong but that doesn’t make it any less amazing. Explore a massive post-apocalyptic Boston as you search for your family, make friends, join factions or just nuke a settlement; the possibilities are endless. The combat is fluid; shooter fans will definitely feel at home while franchise veterans will of course, turn to VATS for that critical shot. This is the game you’ll spend hundreds of hours lost in.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC

The Witcher franchise has always delivered when it comes to long memorable storylines and The Witcher 3 is no different. Geralt of Rivia’s adventures take him across a beautifully crafted living world as he searches for Siri. You will find it very easy to get lost in the world of Witcher 3 thanks to its beautifully-crafted storylines. While the pace might not suite newcomers, RPG fans and fans of the franchise will absolutely love it.

Rocket League Platform: PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One (2016 launch)

The football racing hybrid nobody saw coming; after a rather rocky start with server issues on launch the game quickly became of the most played games on the PlayStation 4. It combines crazy fast RC cars doing backflips and barrel rolls while playing football in a wicked loud arena. If you’re looking for some fun with friends online, then Rocket League is definitely the way to go.

Forza Motorsport 6 Platform: Xbox One

Forza Motorsport 6 is the racing game we so desperately needed after Project Cars and Driveclub left fans of the genre rather disappointed. A celebration of automotive history and simulation perfection, Forza Motorsport 6 doesn’t do much wrong. Unleash your inner roadster with immensely-detailed cars on some of the most popular real world tracks or spend endless hours in Forzavista checking out every corner of your favourite ride; this is as good as it gets for racing games.

What we hated: Archishman

There were disappointments too. Some of the titles — including the exclusives — turned out to be just hype. Make no mistake, these games were all pegged to be AAA titles, carrying with them the burden of huge expectation

Star Wars Battlefront

Possibly one of the best looking games to have ever been made, Battlefront does an excellent job of creating breathtakingly beautiful settings which will immerse gamers. Where it does fall painstakingly short is in the content department. With hardly three good game modes and barely any maps the game gets real old, real fast. And throw in the fact that everything is locked behind a pay wall, the alternative to which is playing the game for an insane number of hours, is what cements this game’s position at the number one spot on our list of the most disappointing games of 2015.

Order 1886

This new IP for the PS 4 entered the market generating a tremendous buzz. Everyone was excited about the possibility of a new series for the PlayStation 4. Sadly though, The Order 1886 turned out to be a 6-hour tech demo for the console. The abundant QTEs and the lacklustre gameplay was just not enough to carry this game to live up to its hype. Overall, a very good-looking flop.

Evolve

When I heard that Turtle Rock Studios, the masterminds behind the Left 4 Dead franchise were doing an asymmetric co-op shooter, I was excited. The demos that were given were impressive. On launch however, most of us realised that a majority of the game was hidden behind DLC and microtranscations. Throw in the fact that the game had seen a graphical downgrade and wasn’t the best balanced shooter out there, the player base vanished fast.

Battlefield Hardline

EA completely dropped the ball with this one. Deviating from the much loved Battlefield formula and adopting a “Cops and Robbers” model really handicapped the game. Moreover, a complete lack of variety in terms of maps, guns and vehicles completely takes away everything that is unique to the Battlefield franchise, throw in a by the numbers, clichéd campaign and you have one very disappointing first person shooter.

Batman Arkham Knight (PC Port)

The Arkham series of Batman games has produced not only some of the strongest Batman games till date but can also be included as some of the best games in the entire action-adventure genre. Arkham Knight also kept this brilliant legacy up for people who had adopted the title on the consoles, the PC version was anything but. Rife with bugs and a frame rate cap of 30 FPS, Arkham Knight was met with a lot of anger from the PC community to the point that Warner Bros. were forced to withdraw the game.
