Hyderabad: Crime against women escalates

Hyderabad: Crime against women witnessed an eight per cent growth in 2015 over the last year. There were 55 dowry deaths, 1,487 harassment cases and 577 cases of outraging the modesty of a woman.
Fifty-six bigamy cases were also registered this year, up by four from 2014. The SHE teams that were launched a year ago also proved to be effective in restricting crimes against women.
The cyber crime cell meanwhile saw a dip from 259 cases in 2014 to 193 in 2015. “The number of crimes against women is the same but it is a good sign that more women are coming out against it. This resulted in registering 2,518 cases of crime against women,” Cyberabad Police comissioner said.
There were 55 dowry deaths (14 per cent increase), 13 dowry murders (18 per cent increase), 1487 harassment cases (10 per cent increase) and 577 cases outraging the modesty of a woman (15 per cent increase) registered.
Meanwhile abetment to suicide, murders of women and women being kidnapped decreased in 2015.
The SHE teams also proved effective in controlling crime against women, particularly in the IT corridor, said the commissioner. A total of 660 cases were registered by SHE teams and 825 persons, including 118 minors and 707 majors, were arrested.
The Cyberabad police has introduced SHE shuttles for the use of IT employees and SHE cabs from the airport especially for women flyers.
