Grand welcome awaits Sonia Gandhi in Kottayam
Kottayam: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who will inaugurate the silver jubilee celebrations of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RIT), Pampady, will be given a grand welcome by the party workers here on Wednesday. She will also hold discussions with the UDF leaders on the current political developments in the state.
Ms Gandhi will reach the police parade ground here around 12.10 pm by helicopter from Nedumbassery airport, accompanied by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, home minister Ramesh Chennithala, KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran and AICC leader Mukul Wasnik.
They will reach Nattakom government guest house by 2.30 p.m. and leave for Pampady where she will inaugurate the silver jubilee at 3 p.m. She will return to Nedumbassery 5.30 p.m. from Kottayam.
Kerala Congress (M) leaders, including chairman K.M. Mani, will meet the Congress president and apprise her of the alleged conspiracy which led to the resignation of Mr Mani.
The others who will meet her include Mr P.K. Kunhalikutty, Mr M.P. Veerendra Kumar , Mr Shibu Baby John, Mr Johny Nelloor and Mr Rajan Babu.
Security has been tightened in and around the town with the deployment of a strong posse of policemen. Traffic regulations have also been put in place, the police said.
