Arena, bulls ready at Koolaimedu hamlet

In Salem district, Jallikattu is traditionally held in 30 villages.

Salem: There is jubilation in villages as the famous Jallikattu sport is all set to bounce back after a seven-year ban. The villagers of Koolaimedu near Attur in Salem district have already started preparations for the bull taming sport during the Pongal festival.

“Whether the ban is lifted or not, we don’t care. We will hold the Jallikattu,” says A. Kandasamy, Koolaimedu panchayat president and chief of the Jallikattu organising committee.

“The arena is ready and the bulls are raring to take the plunge,” he asserts. The villagers have already bought wooden barricades to fence off the arena for the safety of the spectators. Even when other villages in Tamil Nadu did not conduct Jallikattu following the Supreme Court ban, Koolaimedu defiantly held the sport, barring last year.

In Salem district, Jallikattu is traditionally held in 30 villages, but the Koolaimedu bull taming event is a huge draw in the district.
