Party all right, party all night, but watch out, liver takes the beating

During and after the New Year season, streams of patients come with interpersonal, psycho-social issues.
Hyderabad: With the party season in full swing, binge drinking is a cause for concern as it results in greater damage to the liver in a short period of time, doctors said ahead of the New Year festivities.
During and after the New Year season, streams of patients come with interpersonal, psycho-social issues and also withdrawal symptoms. There are cases of youngsters showing excessive restlessness, psychomotor agitation, warm flushed extremities, fever, delirium and even hallucinosis. Dr Dharmesh Kapoor, senior consultant hepatologist at Global Hospitals, said, “Revellers suffer from Holiday Heart Syndrome when they drink beyond limits. Alcohol increases the level of adrenaline hormone which causes the heart to flutter or stop abruptly. This can cause vomiting and choking.”
Dr R. Raghu, general physician explained, “The major problem seen is excessive vomiting leading to dehydration. At the same time, ‘hangovers’ last in some people for two days at a stretch leading to severe headache and also body pain. It is very important for people to opt for immediate and proper treatment measures to control the damage that has happened to the body.”
