On a sing, song in reel life

Actress awaits her debut in Kannada with Style King and speaks about acting with Golden Star Ganesh, and more.
After singing her way into Sandalwood with Try Try Training Kodtini once more try... for Rudratandava, she bagged a golden opportunity as the heroine in the Golden Star’s upcoming release Style King directed by PC Shekar. The singer-turned-actor Remya Nambeesan makes her Kannada debut after a successful career in Tamil, Telugu, and mostly in Malayalam movies. The versatile actress with 50-plus films to her credit including several as a child artiste, and over a dozen as a playback singer, shares her recent experience shooting for her debut Kannada film Style King, and much more in an exclusive with Bengaluru Chronicle.
“I am so happy that I started my Sandalwood career with such an experienced crew. I have so far worked in all the south Indian languages. It was a great learning experience — in terms of languages and culture. I initially struggled with the dialogues as it was a new language. Kannada was the toughest language to learn but now apart from my mother tongue Malayalam, I am totally in love with Kannada. I am thankful to talented director Shekar and my supportive co-actor Ganesh who helped me understand and learn it,” says Remya, who apart from being a trained vocalist is also a Bharatanatyam dancer.
Apart from Style King which is ready to hit the screens, the actor-singer reveals that she has signed another Tamil project — Sethupathi. “I had earlier sung a Kannada song, and I almost missed singing for my own Kannada film due to a personal reason. The recording of the song was arranged, but unfortunately, I could not make it as my grandma passed away,” she says.
From a family with an artistic background, her father was involved in theatre and the arts. “My father encouraged me to develop an interest in the field of arts. He himself was closely involved with it so he sent me to dance classes at an early age and I slowly graduated to other media. I worked as an anchor which gave me immense exposure and my talent was identified and I was finally chosen to play lead roles,” recalls the actress.
She portrays an optimistic girl in Style King who unites two families. Her brother Rahul too has worked in Malayalam films, as a music director. “My biggest strength is my family without whom I could not have reached this far. Their support means a lot to me. My father’s theatre background, my mother’s artistic one and my brother, all play a major role in my life. I discuss projects with them,” she says.
On working in Bollywood after working in all the south Indian languages, Remya feels that while she does not have plans to think so ahead, she believes in taking up roles as and when opportunity knocks. The new year sees Remya sure that she will not make any resolutions! “My new resolution is not to have any resolution. I have not fulfilled any of the earlier resolutions I had resolved to do in the past so it is best to not to have any more of them,” she laughs.
