Obama invites Modi, Sharif for nuclear summit in Washington next year

Relationship between the two countries have taken an abrupt turn with Modi’s visit to Lahore.

Karachi: US President Barack Obama has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to attend the Nuclear Security Summit from March 31 to April 1 next year in Washington.

According to The Express Tribune, there has been no official announcement regarding the invitation as yet, but it is expected that both the leaders will attend the event.

The conference would offer the first planned opportunity in 2016, to carry forward bilateral ties between India and Pakistan which have seen some icy lows and relative heights this year.

According to reports, the Obama administration’s sees nuclear terrorism as one of most immediate and extreme threat to global security, and nuclear security remains one of the biggest concerns of US, particularly in South Asia. The fourth Nuclear Security Summit had been announced by Obama during the previous edition of the moot in 2014.

Relationship between the two countries have taken a new twist with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Lahore last week to greet Nawaz Sharif on his birthday.

The foreign secretaries of both countries are scheduled to meet in mid-January 2016 in Islamabad, and are expected to announce the new agenda of the comprehensive dialogue between the two nations. The meeting late March in Washington would give the two leaders a chance to review developments, claim reports.
