Top Maoist leader lays down arms
Surender was underground since age of 18 and has been working with the Maoist party for 24 years.

Warangal: Top Maoist leader and secretary of South Bastar District committee Gajerla Ashok (41) alias Aithu Surender who also works in the Dandakaranya Special Zone Committee surrendered before the police in the presence of Warangal range DIG B Malla Reddy and rural SP Ambar Kishor Jha on Tuesday.
Surender was underground since the age of 18 and has been working with the Maoist party since the past 24 years. He is considered as the good organizer and played a major role in strengthening the party in Telangana and Chattisgarh states.
He is a native of Velishala village in Chityal mandal of Warangal district. Surender's two other brothers are still underground working in top positions in the party in Chattisgarh state. Surender is the last among five brothers.
“I am surrendering due to personal reasons. I am not keeping well and I am disturbed because of conflicts within the party,'' he said.
DIG Malla Reddy said Surender joined the Maoist party in 1991 and worked for ten years in Warangal district in armed squads. In 2001 he was sent to Bastar district where he became Bastar divisional committee member. In 2008, he joined the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee continuing as secretary of South Bastar district committee of Maoist party. ''District police will extend all support to Surender in terms of financial support and welfare measures,” he said.
